Personal Effects Customs Clearance: United Arab Emirates (UAE)

When shipping personal effects to the UAE with GetMyParcel, customers must adhere to the following guidelines to ensure smooth customs clearance:

Definition of Personal Effects

Personal effects are used items that have been in the sender's possession for at least 6 months. Common examples include clothing, books, sports equipment, and household items, often accompanying relocation or travel.

Shipments containing new items, gifts, or commercial goods must not be declared as personal effects. Instead, select the appropriate category during booking, such as "Gift" or "Commercial."

Required Documentation for UAE Clearance

  1. Passport Copy:
    • A scanned copy of the receiver's passport must be provided to assist with customs clearance.
  2. Residence/Employment Visa:
    • For shipments exceeding a declared value of 300 AED, a copy of the receiver's Residence or Employment Visa is required to gain duty and tax exemption.
    • Documents under the sender's name will be rejected.
  3. Packing List:
    • A detailed non-generic packing list is mandatory. For example, specify "5 x Cotton Shirts" instead of "10 x Used Clothing."

Customs Advice for Non-Residents

  • If the receiver does not hold a UAE Residence or Employment Visa or a UAE Passport, ensure the declared value does not exceed 300 AED to qualify for duty-free entry.

Additional Fees

  • Shipments may incur a clearance fee of 70–100 AED, payable on delivery.
  • If additional information or documentation is delayed, storage fees may also apply.

Customs Inspection and Processing Times

While most shipments clear customs without issue, bags flagged for inspection or missing documentation typically take 2 working days for processing and release.

General Tips for Smooth Clearance

  • Always check UAE customs regulations based on your shipment and personal circumstances.
  • Avoid including brand-new or prohibited items in personal effects shipments.
  • Complete all required documentation accurately and in advance to prevent delays.

Duty and taxes depend on the customs team evaluation. Getmyparcel doesn't have any control over that.
