Important Customs Information for GetMyParcel Shipments
Most countries, including the UK, USA, and Australia, offer a tax- and duty-free allowance for returning residents, travelers, and settlers shipping unaccompanied luggage containing personal clothing and effects (e.g., sports equipment) that are solely for personal use and have typically been owned for at least six months.
Over 99% of GetMyParcel shipments of personal effects meet tax-free allowances and clear customs without incurring duties or taxes. If a warning popup or important message appears when placing your order, please read it carefully before proceeding.
- Personal Effects
- Gifts
- Commercial Goods
Personal effects are used items, such as clothes, books, and belongings typically brought on holiday or shipped as part of a relocation, including sports equipment or household furnishings. The owner of these goods is generally traveling or has traveled to the destination around the shipment date.
If your shipment consists of new items, gifts, or goods being sent for commercial purposes, do not declare them as personal effects. Instead, select the appropriate category, such as Gift or Commercial during booking.
Customs Clearance for Italy
Declared Value
Shipments to Italy must have a declared value below 140€ / £120 / $100 USD to avoid delays and additional duties or taxes. The declared value is for customs purposes only and does not affect the complimentary cover provided by GetMyParcel.
Sanitary Clearance
Shipments containing foodstuffs, cosmetics, medications, or medical equipment will require sanitary clearance, which involves additional documentation and a fee (30-50€) paid to our courier partner. These shipments are also subject to physical customs inspections, causing delays of about one week.
Duty-Free Clearance
Duty-free entry is typically granted for:
- Permanent imports related to relocation or study.
- Returning residents who were abroad for more than six months.
Italian customs assess temporary imports (e.g., holidays or short-term business trips) case by case and may levy duties and taxes. Any fees will need to be paid by the recipient directly to the courier partner.
Required Documentation
All customers must provide:
- Passport Copy: Details page.
- Italian Fiscal Code: Required for Italian citizens or residents.
- Flight Ticket: Proof of travel within 12 months of shipment arrival.
Additional Documents (If Applicable)
- Returning Citizens: Entry stamp/visa and proof of study/work abroad for over six months (e.g., enrollment letter or job contract).
- Relocation or Study: Proof of residence or study in Italy for six months or more (e.g., visa or job contract).
Shipping on Behalf of Someone Else?
Used personal effects shipped for another person must include their name on both the collection and delivery addresses. Supporting documentation must also be in their name.
Gifts may qualify for duty-free entry if their value is below the destination’s gift limit. For example, the UK allows duty-free gifts up to £39. Taxes and handling fees may apply if the value exceeds this limit.
Check the destination's rules for gift value limits, eligible items, and labeling requirements
Commercial shipments include items sold or purchased and shipped for business purposes. Duties, taxes, and handling fees are typically applied based on the declared value. GetMyParcel does not control or profit from these fees.
For further assistance, refer to the destination’s customs guidelines or contact GetMyParcel customer support.
