What Qualifies as Personal Effects?

  1. Definition:
    Personal effects are items intended for personal use that are typically:

    • Owned by the consignee for a minimum of six months before shipping.
    • Being sent as part of a personal move (e.g., relocation, holiday, or temporary business trip).
  2. Key Criteria:
    • Personal effects must not include brand-new items, commercial goods, or gifts.
    • If you’re shipping new items, gifts, or items for business purposes, select the appropriate shipping category (e.g., “Gift” or “Commercial”) when booking.

 

Customs Clearance for Personal Effects in the Netherlands

  1. Duty-Free Clearance Rules:
    Unlike most countries, Dutch customs do not automatically grant tax exemptions for all personal effects. Specific rules apply:
    • Permanent Imports (Relocation/Study): Duty relief may apply if the consignee is relocating to the Netherlands for one year or more and provides necessary evidence, such as:
